Sonoran Storm Water Quality

The results are in! Here’s a comparison of our Sonoran Storm Pure Rainwater versus Tucson Water’s tap water. You can see that Tucson Water has a lot more stuff in it and our water really is virtually pure. We can start with Total Dissolved Solids: Sonoran Storm has 50 mg/L and Tucson water has 534 mg/L. This figure was taken from the Tucson Water Quality Monitoring Dashboard, all other data was taken from the 2024 Annual Water Quality Report. Total dissolved solids (TDS) is the measurement of all the minerals, salts, metals, organic and inorganic substances in the water you’re drinking. You may also have noticed that in this instance, Tucson Water has TDS above the EPA recommendation.

Next, we can see that Tucson Water has levels of Chlorine, Fluoride, Nitrates, Lead and Copper, while Sonoran Storm does not. Some of these things are added by them. The Chlorine is used to disinfect. Since we use special gravity filters and UV lights to make sure our water is pure we don’t need to add Chlorine. Sonoran Storm also doesn’t add Fluoride to our water. The copper in tap water can come from pipes or naturally from erosion of the rocks the water flowed through. In our case, the rainwater has never traveled below ground, or even on the ground, so it can’t pick up metals or other contaminants that way. As for the Nitrates in Tucson Water, they can come from fertilizer runoff, septic tank or sewage leaching, or natural erosion.

We’ve included our complete results in the table below. If there’s a blank space in the Tucson Water column it’s because we couldn’t find data for that contaminant. All of the EPA figures were taken from this handy and fascinating document: National Primary Drinking Water Standards.
